Vice President and National Accounts Director Jane Brown queries Damon Murray & Stephen Sorrell, publishers of Fuel, on their new book of drawings by the late Danzig Baldaev, a Russian prison guard who made unique chronicles of the infamous gulags.
Baldaev will be sent to an orphanage for 2 years in Tulun, Siberia. In January 1943 he joins the army, fights in Mandshuria. After the war he moves with his father to Leningrad, where he gets a job, first as a fireman, then after 1951 as a guard. in 1957 he gets to a police school in tha Caucasus, later on he works as a criminalistic officer.
Drawings from the Gulag begins unexpectedly, with a headshot of a proud homo-sovieticus from one of the USSR’s eastern minorities. Wearing thick soviet spectacles and a soviet suit, and with impeccable posture, this man gazes at you, the reader, with firm resolve.
Besides the books about tattoos Baldaev has a couple of interesting books: “Drawings from the Gulag,” or in English “Drawings from the Gulag” and “Thieves’ Slang Dictionary.” I have not read these books by Danzig as well as the previous ones.

I find it’s interesting, though unsurprising, that Danzig Baldaev was a prison guard. The brutality of his art, in addition to the shear breadth of situations he depicts, speaks to this sort of guilt that he might’ve felt. Almost as if these drawings are coping mechanisms.
